Paul Lingren Family Memorial Scholarship

Paul Lingren, an American printmaker and teacher of art, was best known to his colleagues and students as a person who provided an environment where creativity, freedom of expression and humor were fostered. His prints are in museums and university collections, the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. embassies in Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, and India, in private and public collections in Mexico and throughout the world. Among his accomplishments are the following: SDSU Outstanding Educator; research grants from SDSU, the Fulbright-Hays Commission, and the Grey Foundation (curator grant); directorship of a joint USIA-Smithsonian International Printmaking Workshop, encompassing the Near and Far East; teaching at Idyllwild School of Music and Arts (ISOMATA) and giving workshops with Francois Gilot; curator for the festival of India “Contemporary Printmaking-India,” a traveling exhibition; and curator for “The American Miniature Printmaking Exhibition” held at SDSU. Paul Lingren’s professional contributions in printmaking influenced many professional artists and students abroad. He is especially well-remembered by SDSU for teaching over three decades in the school, where he also served as the department chairman and contributed significantly to the design of the Art Building. Paul was honored by the USIS, who sponsored the “Paul Lingren Memorial Exhibit,” in Madras, India in 1989.
