Donor Profile:
As the only child of Louis F. and Ruth Anna Cable howled her first greeting at Naval Hospital in Balboa Park, San Diego, California in December of 1946, World War II was at an end and San Diego was booming. The Cables enjoyed decorating their new home while Dorothy demonstrated an interest in gardening at an early age with her hot pursuit of every garden tool touched by her father as he landscaped their yard.
The Marine Corps called and their idyllic existence changed as a bit of wanderlust was introduced into the life of the Cable family. They soon made their way to St. Joseph, Missouri. Fireplaces replaced the warm sunshine of Southern California as the focal point of her family’s existence during the three years spent there. Then it was off to the southern comfort of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where her formal education began.
After nursery school, kindergarten, and first grade, it was time to return to sunny California — this time to Long Beach for three years, filled with ballet and tap-dancing lessons, along with learning to ride a bicycle, roller skating, and long walks along the local golf courses, watching her parents pursue their favorite past time.
Weekends were filled with extended family gatherings at Balboa Island with aunts and uncles from both sides of her family adding even more love to her world. Selling Blue Bird peanuts, collecting sea shells, and creating crafts also helped to fill her spare time.
Then it was time to return home to San Diego, where along with the continuing study of ballet, Mr. Benjamin’s dance class taught her social graces and drama, and Job’s Daughters were enjoyed.
After attending Sunset View Elementary, Dana Junior High, and Point Loma High School, it was now time to continue the serious study of theatre at San Diego State University. A teaching credential opened the door to Sweetwater Union High School in National City, where for 33 years directing skills were challenged by over 90 main stage productions and countless student festivals.
Both her mother and father participated in her world of theatre. Her father was a wonder with props, building desks, stools, vanities, platforms, screens, beds, step units, and even a work of art needed for the production of Black Comedy. Her mother spent countless hours in pursuit of just the right prop and the patterns and material to create untold costumes.
Those days are now fondly remembered and celebrated by the annual gift to San Diego State University in support of the Dorothy, Ruth Anna, Louis F. Cable Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of her loving mother, who was the best audience a young performer could ever wish for, and her father, who allowed students to work in a world surrounded by handcrafted props.
Her life was also filled with trips to Europe, the British Isles, Mexico, and Hawaii that broadened the knowledge she shared with students, providing them with new stimuli. After retirement, a variety of activities filled her life, including P.E.O. Chapter GN, The English-Speaking Union, The San Diego Shakespeare Society, the University Women’s Club, the Red Hat Society, the Sweetwater Ladies Ultimate Tournament of Scrabble and Zeta Rho A Woman’s Study Group.
Days are now filled with the joys of gardening — unfortunately, she no longer needs to do battle with her father over the garden tools — and knitting prayer shawls to provide comfort for those who have suffered a loss or who are dealing with the loneliness of aging. As well as finding pleasure in reading books, she enjoys preparing lessons for American Literature students or finding the perfect script to accommodate the number of performers enrolled in theatre production. Finally, living in the Sunset Cliffs area of San Diego allows her to enjoy the sunsets, a true blessing in her life.
