Mindy Gates O'Mary Memorial Scholarship
The Mindy Gates O’Mary Memorial Scholarship will provide support for students pursuing a major in English and Comparative Literature, Rhetoric Writing, and/or Journalism and Media Studies.
If you do not meet all of these requirements in a given term, you may lose your scholarship eligibility and your scholarship may be canceled.
Requirements:
- Applicants must be studying in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, Journalism & Media Studies, or Rhetoric and Writing Studies.
- Undergraduate juniors, seniors, and graduate students are eligible.
- Recipients must be unpublished writers.
- Undergraduate recipients must have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00, or the arithmetic equivalent.
- Graduate recipients must have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.25 out of 4.00, or the arithmetic equivalent.
- Applicants are not required to be enrolled full-time.
Donor Profile:
When Mindy Gates O’Mary, a vibrant young writer, developed multiple sclerosis, the California Press Women established this tribute award as a token of love and encouragement. Upon her death the award became a scholarship designed to encourage young, unpublished writers. It is available exclusively to SDSU students. Applicants must be unpublished writers to be eligible.

- Submit an original short story of no more than 2,500 words with a surprise ending. Be sure to provide a title with your short story.
