Sue Russell Memorial Endowed Scholarship

SUE CAROL RUSSELL (April 17, 1947 – April 29, 2009) was of Ukrainian and Austrian descent. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York; a daughter of immigrants who came to the United States around the turn of the century to provide themselves and their children a safer, happier, and more productive life. An ardent believer in education, Sue graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in English. She took immense pride from earning her degree later in life, having spent evenings studying even after working all day with the excellence and dedication that everyone associated with her. Sue was an intelligent, passionate and intensely curious woman, yet she maintained a gentleness of presence defined by modesty and humility. She hungered for the things in life she had not yet experienced and took great satisfaction from the things she had already achieved. Sue had a passion for politics, literature, the theatre, the wonders of the cosmos, and even the San Diego Chargers. One powerful love she had that overshadowed even her most common passions was her love for dogs, especially her dog Jack Bailey. Over a long and successful career in real estate, Sue developed countless friendships with Burnham Real Estate (now Cushman & Wakefield) employees and clientele. Sue was happiest when at the office interacting with her friends and doing her job with precision and skill. Although it was widely known and respected that Sue was a personally private woman, she was also known as a warm, gregarious and generous person who delighted in life and who was adored by all who knew her. Sue Russell passed away tragically and unexpectedly at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California on April 29, 2009. To honor Sue’s achievements and spirit, the Burnham Foundation has established the Sue Russell Memorial Endowed Scholarship to help recipients achieve their dreams of attending college. The scholarship recognizes SDSU students who demonstrate academic success while facing, similar to Sue, challenges toward attaining their degree.
